Bibliotecas Vivas

Bibliotecas Vivas means "Living Libraries." In cooperation with grassroots organizations within the communities of Alto Selva Alegre, ICDU brings together various resources in order to initiate sustainable libraries that can both foster literacy and orient community members to the subject matter of books selected to meet needs identified by the community members themseves.

After a variety of frustrating experiences with Promolibro, the department of the Ministry of Education with which we were collaborating, ICDU has made the decision to proceed with the library project independently. Promolibro required an unreasonable amount of red tape in exchange for a minimal number of used books. We feel that we should provide better resources for the libraries, and we can do so much more efficiently without government bureaucracy. This means that your contributions to the Bibliotecas Vivas project are more valuable than ever.
